36 Parables by John Schimke and Stewart Redwine (Bible Study/DVD Review)
Six years ago, John Schimke and Stewart Redwine created and produced the first 36 Parables’ 5-minute short film entitled “Found” with no budget, a two-page script, and a borrowed camera.
36 Parables is a short film DVD series capturing the 36 parables taught by Jesus Christ in the Gospels and presenting them to the modern audience. One-third of Jesus’ teachings were in the form of parables so John Schimke and Stewart Redwine decided to creatively use the camera lens to share God’s words in a medium of this era.
Each of the series is based on one parable of Jesus then having a modern adaptation but in no way delineate Jesus’ moral stories. Each DVD carries a color for its title and three short films based on three parables:
DVD Purple- The Parables of the Friend At Midnight, The Shrewd Manager, and The Barren Fig Tree
DVD Amber- The Parables of The Rich Man and Lazarus, The Leafing Fig Tree, and The Good Shepherd.
DVD Cyan- The Parables of New Wine in Old Wineskins, The Rich Fool
DVD Blue- The Parables of the Hidden Treasure, The Wicked Servant, and The Two Debtors
DVD Yellow- The Parable of the Good Samaritan, The Talents, and The Lost Coin
John Schimke and Stewart Redwine are graduates of Azusa Pacific University and are Christian filmmakers with a vision to produce films with a Scriptural imprint transforming lives and inculcating a love for God’s Words. Their purpose is to illuminate understanding to their audience, drive them to go back to Jesus’ parables, and know the Storyteller (Jesus) intimately.
Each of the series will definitely affect its viewer in a good way. There is a certain tinge in your spirit and soul as you watch every story. It will leave you wondering, contemplating, and discovering the lessons much like you were part of the crowd while Jesus narrates each parable. My personal favorite is “Found”, a story of a vagabond searching for something deemed so precious to him. It is based on the Parable of the Lost Coin. Nonetheless, all of the 36 Parables are worth your time and money. The cinematography is excellent having been a product of Universal Studios for sound and Kodak’s LaserPacific for color work. Zondervan carries 36 Parables on its shelf.
36 Parables is suitable to introduce a pastor’s preaching or a catalyst for small group, bible study, and other church ministries. A downloadable Bible Study Guide for all the short films is available for free online in 36 Parables’ website. 36 Parables by John Schimke and Stewart Redwine has a few excerpts on YouTube.
